Murrayville is the hometown of Rachael Sporn, national basketball champion, this vibrant rural town is frequented by 4WD enthusiasts, naturalists and other visitors who come to see the area's wildflowers, wildlife and sunsets. From July to December the local bush is ablaze with wildflowers, wattle in bloom and hop bushes covered in colourful seed pods. No need for a 4WD as some of the area's best wildflowers grow near the town. Pioneer Park in Reed Street has a great playground and wonderful mosaic mural on the toilet wall in Lions Park. Murrayville is located between the Murray Sunset National Park and the Big Desert State Forest, home to diverse flora and fauna. As well as grain and sheep, the area supports less conventional farming enterprises including olives, goats, permaculture and potatoes. (more information)

Cowangie is the birthplace of racing legend Larry Perkins, and has a lot to explore. In the town of Cowangie you'll also find another great part of mallee history... the old Nurses' Cottage on the main street is a chance to get a glimpse into the challenging life of the local region's nurses who serviced the entire district. This included the delivery of local babies and tending to emergencies. Next to the Nurses' Cottage is the old Baker's Oven. Restored by the local community in a great partnership with the renowned Pinnaroo Bakery. Cowangie also allows access to the Great Mallee Wilderness where the magic of the mallee comes alive with beautiful and fragile malleeflowers in spring, the intriguing Malleefowl and unique Australian wilderness. Kow Plains Homestead

The Kow Plains Homestead is signposted and is slightly south-east of Cowangie township. It is one of the few surviving Mallee colonial homesteads. It is a rough-hewn vernacular building of drop log construction from local pine. The homestead was built as a head station for Kow Plains and the adjoining runs owned by Dugald Macpherson and William Macdonald probably in 1879. (more information)

Tutye

Tutye is a locality situated on the section of the Mallee Highway between Ouyen and the South Australian border in the Sunraysia region of Victoria, Australia. By road, it's about 9 kilometres southeast from Boinka and 12 kilometres northwest from Cowangie. Fourteen species of acacias can be found here. A Post Office opened on 15 July 1912 when a regular mail service was provided by the opening of the railway from Ouyen to Murrayville a month earlier. The office closed in 1980. (more information)

Boinka

There are three native flora reserves located in Boinka. The road to the cemetery passes through one of these and it is well worth a drive during spring to see the flowers in bloom. One of the few remaining single room schools stands here on its original site, it is now the community centre and houses memorabilia of the district. (more information)

Linga

The Linga walking trail is an interesting short walk where many plants including small greenhead orchids can be found. The walk is in the same area as where the sporting grounds once were. The name Linga is believed to be an invented derivative from the traditional Aboriginal name Lar-gni which meant "camp of..." because as a place to camp it was a place to linger. (more information)

Underbool is the Gateway to the Pink Lakes and Murray-Sunset National Park. The Pink Lakes appear pink under certain conditions, and are best in winter and in spring when the wildflowers are in bloom, and wildlife and birdlife is abundant. Caravan and camping facilities are also along the Highway next to the toilets and showers. The shop across from the grassed area supplies takeaway meals, groceries and houses the Post Office. The hotel serves meals but has no accommodation. Fuel is available at the garage & Holden dealership which has been in the Gloster family since 1925. (more information)

Torrita is a locality situated on the section of the Mallee Highway between Ouyen and the South Australian border in the Sunraysia region. By road it's situated about 13 kilometres east from Underbool and 8 kilometres west from Walpeup. A Post Office opened on 15 July 1912 when a regular mail service was provided by the opening of the railway from Ouyen to Murrayville a month earlier, but was known as Nyang until 1921 and closed in 1984. (Pronounced wol'pee'UP) The Walpeup Memorial Hall houses a large collection of historic photographs including images of locals who attended both World Wars, and an historic "welcome home" banner from the first world war and a beautiful hand-sewn community mural tapestry created in 1989. The Dryland Gardens on the corner of Glen and Creagan Streets displays many native trees and shrubs from around the local region and Australia. Travellers can stay in their own caravans or tents at the Wayside stop, corner of Creagan Street and Murphy Road. The wayside stop has a covered barbecue area and well maintained play equipment and lawns. 100 metres from the wayside stop is Shubert's Walk, a nature walk displaying many native trees and shrubs in their natural setting. The town's historic buildings, comfortable climate and proximity to the Murray River are all major draw cards. Manangatang is legendary for its annual racing event and every year people travel far and wide for the ultimate country racing experience. If you're looking for a great day out, then you can't go past the Manangatang races. Where the Mallee meets the River. You'll enjoy the transformation from Mallee landscape to towering River Red Gums. Across the border from Tooleybuc on the Murray Valley Highway, this small town is set amid irrigated farms growing citrus fruit and vines.

North of Piangil there are several signposted detours to points of interest, including Major Mitchell Lagoons. Andrew Peace Wines on the Murray Valley Highway has a wonderful cellar door experience. Piangil is 45km north-west of Swan Hill. (more information)

Cross the 1904 bridge (state border over the Murray River) and from Piangil into Tooleybuc, a small town, set amid irrigated farms growing citrus fruit and vines. Tooleybuc boasts a sporting club providing a range of modern sporting facilities including tennis, golf, bowls and poker machines. The local catchphrase is 'Try your luck in Tooleybuc'.

The Lions Park opposite the Tooleybuc Hotel is a great place to rest, with children's playground, BBQ's and public toilets. From Tooleybuc, the visitor might like to head north into wheat and sheep grazing country, a marked change from the closer settled Victorian side of the river. Heading north this is the road to and from Sydney. At Kyalite, 22km north on the Balranald Road are large plantations of pistachios. Kyalite Pistachios is open to the public during working hours.
